The American Legion is a national organization dedicated to providing support for active service members and veterans. One of the largest veterans’ service organizations, the nonprofit was founded in 1919 by Congress in response to requests from World War I veterans. Today, the American Legion hosts a variety of programs for the benefit of communities across the United States as well as service members. It also provides an array of opportunities for citizens to volunteer, donate, or advocate.
One popular program of the American Legion is its Operation Comfort Warriors. This initiative focuses on providing service members, both at home and still in the field, with comfort items to assist in their physical or mental recovery and rehabilitation. Donations to the program are largely monetary, due to convenience, but the items shipped to these men and women have consisted of loose-fitting sweat suits to cover healing burns without further pain, iPods, DVDs, and more.
